Deluxhost - Cheap VPS Deals

I run too many VPSs...

Some of them are there because I needed them, some are there because I wanted to test something, and some exist because the price was low enough that I convinced myself buying another one was completely reasonable. It usually isn't, but that has never stopped me before and I doubt it is going to start now.

That does at least mean I get a decent feel for which cheap VPS providers are worth bothering with, and which ones are mostly just selling the idea of a bargain.

The short version

If you want a cheap VPS for self-hosting, Docker, websites, VPNs, monitoring, Minecraft servers, game servers, or general tinkering, Deluxhost is one of the better price-to-performance options I've used recently. The cheap plans are actually cheap, surprisingly strong for the money, and generally pretty solid.

Is Deluxhost actually any good for cheap VPS hosting?

Deluxhost is one of the providers I've ended up buying more than once.

The reason is fairly simple: the low-end plans are cheap enough to be interesting, and the better plans can land in a genuinely good place for price versus performance. I'm not pretending this is enterprise hosting, and I'm not buying these because I expect premium hand-holding, but for normal self-hosting jobs they've been better than I expected.

The low-end boxes are the obvious hook. I've got multiple Deluxhost servers around the EUR1.25/month mark with 8 GB RAM, 77 GB storage, and low latency to London. That is the sort of pricing where I normally expect something to be noticeably wrong. In practice, quite a few of these have been perfectly usable.

How do my Deluxhost servers compare against each other?

I keep a running list of my boxes so I can compare them properly instead of relying on memory, because memory is how you end up buying something twice and then acting surprised when it performs exactly the same as the one you already had.

That's the bit I find interesting. There are faster boxes in the list, there are weaker ones, and there is the usual bit of node lottery involved, but overall the spread is decent. The cheap plans are cheap enough to be useful, and the better ones can get into a genuinely decent performance/value bracket.

This is what I mean when I say the cheap boxes are more than usable! It is not fast compared to a dedicated server, but at this price it does not need to be. For most web-based workloads, it's more than adequate.

This is more the sort of thing I'd look at when I want more breathing room without moving out of the still-cheap range. Extra disk space and plenty of RAM - perfect combo for a multi-service web host.

What can you actually run on a cheap Deluxhost VPS?

For the kind of work most people buy a budget VPS for, these are perfectly reasonable.

That is where Deluxhost makes sense to me. Not because it is trying to be some premium managed platform, but because the price-to-performance can be very good when you pick the right plan and land on a decent node.

What are the trade-offs with a cheap VPS?

The main trade-off is the same one you get with pretty much any low-cost provider: you are buying on price first.

That means I would go in expecting a service that is cheap because it is cheap, not because somebody has secretly found a way to deliver premium hosting for almost nothing. Support may be slower than a more expensive managed provider. Troubleshooting may be more on you. Uptime might be fine for months and then suddenly become the thing you are thinking about on a Sunday afternoon.

That is not me picking on Deluxhost specifically. That is just how I treat budget VPS hosting in general.

You pay for what you get, and what you are getting here is mostly good value hardware at a low price, not a white-glove service.

Should you trust a cheap VPS with important data?

No single VPS should be trusted on its own if the data or service actually matters.

That applies to cheap providers, expensive providers, and everything in between.

Any service worth keeping should have:

• External Backups
• Redundancy With a Different Provider (if uptime matters)

That is the rule I'd follow here, and it is the same rule I'd follow anywhere else.

If you are running anything for yourself, back it up externally. If you are running anything for other people, back it up externally and make sure it can survive a provider problem. Cheap VPS hosting is fine. Blind trust in one box is not.

Is Deluxhost worth it overall?

For me, yes.

If what you want is a cheap VPS, a budget self-hosting box, or a low-cost server that is still actually usable, Deluxhost is one of the better options I've got running at the moment.

The very cheap plans are interesting because they are cheap enough to experiment with. The better plans are interesting because they can land in a genuinely strong value bracket. That combination is why I keep coming back to them.
